Association of Federal Regulations in the United States and Canada With Potential Corneal Donation by Men Who Have Sex With Men (JAMA Ophthalmology, 2020)

This study found that between 1558 and 3217 corneal donations are prevented annually due to bans on corneal donation by gay and bisexual men in the United States and Canada. The authors argue that with modern infectious disease testing, such bans are no longer justified by current evidence.

Using Data to Rethink the Ban on Cornea Donation From Men Who Have Sex With Men (JAMA Ophthalmology, 2020)

This invited commentary written by representatives of the American Academy of Ophthalmology argues why a 5-year deferral period for gay and bisexual corneal donors is not evidence-based, and it explains that AAO is encourging the FDA to revise its guidelines for corneal donation by men who have sex with men.
